What Will I learn?

Design Evolution

Great collections are about so much more than designing pretty clothes. We teach a solid grounding in design concepts to ensure there’s always substance behind your style. You learn how a collection evolves from inspiration to a tangible, perfectly executed piece of clothing.

Literally the thread and needle of the design process, here you will learn the necessary technical skills for turning your wildest design ideas into a reality. With classes in patternmaking, sewing and draping, you’ll be able to create runway ready garments.

Collection Presentation

All hard work must be showcased. To do so, you’ll learn the digital aspects of the global fashion industry. Using the Adobe Software (Photoshop and Illustrator), you’ll learn to create and grow your essential portfolio that will be used throughout your career in the fashion industry.

The Courses

Design Evolution

Design Process
Inspiration. We all need to start somewhere, no? Students will get an introduction on how to design from inspiration and where to find it. We teach fashion history and other elements that attribute to beginning the design process.

Textiles and Color Application
The world of fabric is vast and selecting the right type is paramount. Through practical application, students will learn which fabrics are appropriate for specific markets as well as the specific types of clothing. Keeping the Earth green is important and so students will also learn the importance of sustainability and utilizing sustainable fabrics.

Ever wonder how fabric gets its color? Students will learn all about dye houses and other methods for coloring fabrics. Transitioning into the theory of color, students will learn how to create color palettes for their collections.

Fashion Illustration
Have ideas swirling around in your head and need to get them down onto paper? This is the course for that! Upon learning the ‘Fashion Figure,’ you will be able to effectively communicate your designs by illustrating a model wearing a variety of garments, rendering prints and the drape of fabric on a figure. Once you’ve understood the classic proportions, you will then reimagine them to create your own signature style.

Design Development
Elevating your inspiration to the next level is important. As a global industry, fashion is influenced by culture, world travels, treasures in museums and art exhibitions. As you develop your collection, using the outside world to create mood boards and and story boards will be the fundamentals of this course.

Sewing Fundamentals
This course will lay the foundations of successful technical skill. You will become familiar with using an industrial sewing machine through a hands-on exploration of construction techniques. Work your way through seams, zippers, pockets, and more, ultimately creating a reference book of samples and sewing techniques. The course will conclude with the production of a skirt.

Patterns are the framework of your designs. They will allow you to transform you creative ideas into wearable garments. During this course, you’ll practice and refine your pattern drafting skills, learning how to assess and solve design problems. Draft a bodice, dress, shirt, and pant to be sewn in muslin. Once you’ve created a sample of each individual garment, you will produce a final form using appropriate fabric with corresponding closures.

Collection Creation
In this final construction course, you will be putting your new learnt skills to the test. Starting with a mood board and sketches, you will be designing and bringing your creations to life in your final collections. By the end of this course, you will have 3-4 complete looks, fully sewn and finished. These pieces will be shot in an editorial photoshoot or perhaps have the chance to walk down the runway.

Collection Presentation

Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop
In today’s digital fashion world, a designer must learn as many tools as possible to convey their vision to the world. Technology will allow you to realize your creative visions, communicate your brand, and stand out amongst other designers. In this course you will expand your design repertoire by using Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop to translate your designs digitally. This course continues your trajectory from your previous courses using your existing looks.

Your Portfolio is not just a container for your work, but an integral component of your personal design aesthetic. The goal of this course is to learn how to design an industry ready portfolio that plays to your personal strengths and abilities, as well as your creative and technical skills. The digital version of your portfolio should be designed so as to have the option for printing a physical lookbook/portfolio. Likewise, an online presence is a must in any industry. Considering that fashion is a visual medium, being able to give access to your designs is paramount. This course will explore various tools for creating a website to showcase your work.

As you learn the required skills of fashion design, you will be required to obtain an internship for credit. This will provide you with an opportunity to be immersed in the industry and apply new skills that have been learnt in classroom and apply them to a design studio setting. The goal of the internship is to provide students The internship will also provide them with a clearer vision of what they need to learn and the skillset necessary to become a fashion designer.
